Each year, South Australian oyster growers use 2.5 million plastic baskets. As the baskets wear out, the growers are allowed to discard them at the landfill – only growers don’t want to throw them away.
We’ve got a lot of growers who are not comfortable with that and have just stockpiled them and what we’ve realised is that can’t continue. We are a very clean green industry and we want this to show that we consider it to be important, and if these can be recycled or reused, we see that as a great outcome. They’ve heard from a lavender farmer and a yabby farmer, but they’re still looking for a solution.
(If you’re not familiar with Australian names, you’re probably wondering – What on earth is a yabby?)
